Hello.
Welcome to the site of Edinburgh based Video Editor and Photographer, Iona Spence.
Here you will find a selection of work from my 8+ years in the media industry as well as some of my own personal creative projects.

SIGHTS

I've always had an interest in photography.  Thankfully my skills progressed from being a youngster with a point and shoot, accidentally decapitating friends and family, to developing a self taught understanding of composition, light and a keen observational eye.
In 2007 I was given the opportunity to join the newly established picture desk at Scottish Provincial Press as a trainee photographer.   Having never so much as handled a professional DSLR, it was very much a case of being thrown in at the deep end - but I often find that's the best way to learn.  Within weeks I was out on my own covering a range of news stories, magazine features and loving every minute of it.

During my three years working with the news group I developed my skills across a variety of different photographic disciplines and discovered a passion for live music photography and candid reportage - a style which I still employ in much of my professional work to date.
"To everything she does, she brings a creative flair."

SOUNDS
Music runs in the family so there was always instruments around the house and, of course, the piano!
I studied music throughout my school years, picking up the Flute and Guitar along the way and graduated with an MA hons in Music and Film & TV Studies from the University of Glasgow in 2007.
Composition has always interested me more than performance and I continue to write pieces as and when they come.
Mainly I write for myself, though I have found it has helped me out with my video editing work on more than one occasion!
STORIES
I bought myself a video camera aged 16, and I've been filming and cutting stories ever since.
I've been working in video production for over 5 years.  The majority of my time is spent in the edit suite, however, the photographer in me loves to get behind the camera (and out from behind a desk) should the occasion arise.
Over the past few years I've the chance to camera-op on a variety of different projects including live coverage of the Scottish Independence Referendum result and a two-week film shoot in the stunning scenery of the North-West Highlands.

Editing is my passion and for me, it's all about good story telling.  Whether it be a documentary, a promotional video for a new product or a highlights video of festival or event,  it's about taking the raw material, your footage, your interviews, and crafting them into something that engages and connects with people.
"She Rocks!! Very reliable, punctual, does excellent and creative work!"
